And true to their word, the country's largest cable company indeed launched the Philippines' firstTiVo-like service. Called the SkyCable DigiBox iRecord, this unassuming cable box lets you record and even pause live TV, making it the futuristic version of the VCRs of the olden days.
The DigiBox iRecord comes in the form of a set-top box that connects to your TV via HDMI cable. As we've mentioned before, there's a record function that lets you, well, record your fave TV shows on the spot or schedule it for a later time. Plus points for convenience.
And what's even niftier is that you can simultaneously tape record two shows while watching a third one! As for capacity, the Digibox iRecord has a 320GB hard drive that can handle 145 hours of SD (standard definition) video or 86 hours of HD content.
But the recording feature is, as they say, just the tip of the iceberg. The DigiBox iRecord has numerous playback features for your viewing pleasure. There's the bookmarking (selecting scenes you want to review at a later time), slow motion and the frame-by-frame playback (for viewing scenes in greater detail). We deem the last one, together with the slow motion feature, as hits when watching Manny Pacquaio's matches.
And finally, the Digibox iRecord has what is called the "Timeshift" feature that lets you pause a live show and resume it several moments later. SkyCable says this is the favorite feature during initial testing. We have to agree, the prospect of not losing a single second of our fave shows to nature's call gets a thumbs up from us.
Existing SkyCable subscribers can avail of this service by shelling out a refundable deposit of P4,999 plus P399 service fee of using the Digibox iRecord (exclusive of your monthly cable fee). This will also net you 3 months' access to FoxCrime HD, Star Movies HD and NatGeo HD and theoption to upgrade your old DigiBox to the iRecord. Sounds good, yeah? Now if we also have a pause button for life itself then we'll be all set. Aww... emo Techie.
