RIM BlackBerry Bold 9780

RIM BlackBerry Bold 9780
The BlackBerry Bold 9780 may not look like much compared to its predecessor, the Bold 9700, but it’s got the good stuff where it counts. Physically, the 9780 doesn’t look like a great deal of an upgrade — in fact, it looks like a plasticky version of the 9700 because of the absence of the chrome trim. So, if you’re shifting from a 9700 to 9780, don’t expect a lot of people to notice you’ve got a nice new phone. It’s akin to moving from a Curve 8520 to a Curve 3G.
The most significant improvement on the latest Bold installment is it comes with BlackBerry OS 6 out of the box. Okay, so it’s not that big of a step up because Bold 9700 users still can upgrade to the slicker OS. What the Bold 9780 has that its older brother doesn’t have, though, is its doubled internal flash memory, which is the same 512MB as that of the higher-end Torch 9800. That means a smoother running machine and more space for apps — not that RIM has a lot of them, but maybe this is a precursor to brighter things to come in the RIM apps space.
Another noteworthy improvement is the built-in camera. Photos captured using its 5-megapixel camera are a lot clearer than the previous 3.2 megapixels. And just like the previous Bold, battery life of the 9780 is pretty good, considering that the new OS would make you want to tinker with the phone a lot more. Call quality is just as crisp and clear as well.
To upgrade or not to upgrade?
Please don’t waste a good phone such as this, though, if you are not keen on enrolling in a BlackBerry data plan. The beauty of a BlackBerry is partially thanks to the BlackBerry data service, which allows you to synch your emails to your phone and of course, the popular BlackBerry Messenger.
So, where does the Bold 9780 figure in the family of Berries? If you’re a current BlackBerry Bold 9700 user, try upgrading your OS to version 6 first before deciding, as shifting to the 9780 may simply boil down to asking yourself if you need a better built-in camera.
But if you’re a Curve user — whether it’s the older 8520 or the fresher Curve 3G — you now have the second best new option for an upgrade: the BlackBerry Bold 9780. The best option would still be the BlackBerry Torch, but that’s if you have a few more thousands of pesos to spare
