2010 TOYOTA 4RUNNER: OVERVIEW

The 2010 Toyota 4Runner is redesigned with freshened styling, more V6 power, and a new 4-cylinder engine. This midsize SUV uses traditional truck-type construction. 4Runner comes in three trim levels: base SR5, off-road-ready Trail, and top-line Limited. Rear-wheel drive is standard on the SR5 and Limited. Two 4-wheel-drive systems are offered. Available on SR5 and standard on Trail is a part-time setup that should not be left engaged on dry pavement. Limited versions have a full-time setup that can. Both include low-range gearing for off-road use. Trail models have additional 4WD hardware, including Toyota's Crawl Control (CRAWL), which is designed to regulate speed in severe off-road conditions. Also included is Toyota's Multi-Terrain Select system, which allows drivers to adjust the 4WD hardware to suit different off-road terrain. Rear-drive 4Runner SR5 models have a 157-hp 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine borrowed from Toyota's Tacoma compact pickup truck. It pairs with a 4-speed automatic transmission. All other versions have a 270-hp 4.0-liter V6, an increase of 34 hp over the 2009 4Runner V6. This engine teams with a 5-speed automatic. A V8 is no longer available. Maximum towing capacity is 2000 lb for the 4-cylinder and 5000 lb for the V6. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Standard seating is for five, and an optional 3rd-row bench increases capacity to seven. Leather upholstery is standard on the Limited and optional on the SR5. Also standard on the Limited are dual-zone automatic climate control and keyless entry and engine start. We have not yet tested the 2010 Toyota 4Runner.
